Tasty Television: Hannibal 1×03 Potage *Spoilers*

I think we are looking at a really great series here. This week’s episode of Hannibal was amazing. It opens with a flashback of the Minnesota Shrike and his daughter, Abigail Hobbs, hunting in the woods. He tells her they must use every part of the deer they kill in order to honor it. Then we get flashes of a dead human girl and she finally wakes up from her coma.  And with that, everyone wants to talk to her. This includes the ever nosy Freddie Lounds. Continue reading →

Do Not Disturb The Family – Stoker Review

Park Chan-wook is a director that I have much admiration for. His stories and worlds are always amazing, thought-provoking and interesting. I was hooked on this director from his Vengeance movies.  More specifically, the first film I watched from him, Oldboy. Due for a remake from Spike Lee soon, Oldboy is a film that once you sit down on this roller-coaster you don’t want to get off. You want to keep going again and again and again until someone, physically, forces you get off and let others have a turn. I know the first time I watched Oldboy I fell in love with the film and wanted to watch more from this director. When it was announced that Park Chan-wook would be directing Stoker as his English-language debut, I knew I had to see this film and that I would need to find a way to plant myself in a seat as soon as the movie is released. Hannibal Lecter is one of America’s most iconic fictional serial killers. Created by author Thomas Harris in the 1981 novel Red Dragon, he blew up. This lead to two sequel novels, a prequel, and five films featuring the character. The book Red Dragon has been adapted twice for the big screen, the first time with the box office bomb Manhunter in 1986 a film featuring Brian Cox as the famous cannibal, then again in the 2002 film Red Dragon featuring Anthony Hopkins.  Now, in 2013 we have a third adaptation of the book with Bryan Fullers new show: Hannibal. Call Me Joe: A G.I. Joe Retaliation Review

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been a huge G.I. Joe fan. I loved the toys and the cartoon and the animated movie. My favorite incarnation, however, has to be the 2009 animated serial G.I. Joe Resolute. It was adult, serious, and had probably the best interpretation of Cobra Commander I have ever seen. That same year, a live action movie came out, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. I was super excited to see all of my favorite characters on screen, especially Cobra Commander.

In Defense of DC’s New 52

In 2011 DC thought up a new marketing strategy to get people to buy more of their comics. At this point, Marvel Comics was kicking their butts when it came to sales, and DC needed something new and fresh. What they did was create something called “The New 52.” A lot of people were wondering if this would be similar to their event 52 in which DC released an issue of the event every week for 52 weeks. We were dead wrong. What they did choose to do was a complete overhaul of the universe combining certain universes and breaking a way new ones and essentially rebooting the entire DC Universe.  Unfortunately this was very controversial and lead to many people dropping DC altogether, and bad mouthing them at any chance they could.  However, unlike some comic fans I am a little more open minded and decided to actually give the new universe a chance. Lords of Salem: Guest Review by StiffMag’s Dave Harlequin

It’s no big secret; I am a huge fan of Rob Zombie. From his days as the charismatic front man for 90s horror-metal act White Zombie to his more recent endeavors as a horror-filmmaker, I totally support the Astro-Creep! So when Zombie’s latest effort: “THE LORDS OF SALEM” made its long-awaited debut, there weren’t very many lengths I wouldn’t go to in order to see this film… including traveling to Canada to see it first at the Toronto International Film Fest (which I totally, absolutely did rather than just finding a way to torrent it off the internet, I swear!).

I fear I might be one of those lost souls who actually enjoyed Terry Gilliam’s 2005 The Brothers Grimm film. That is the first film that I actually remember that kickstarted doing darker twists and turns on classic fairytales. And, really, fairytales should live in the dark, no matter how much we love Disney.
