Graphically Awesome: X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills.

godlovesmankills1

This is Graphically Awesome, where I take a look at standalone graphic novels and trade paperbacks and tell you if they are awesome or not.

As a lot of you are aware I am not a huge Marvel fan.  I used to be, but as the years went on and I looked into other things I found that Marvel just wasn’t as good as it used to be.  However, a lot of older Marvel titles are fantastic.  There is also going to be another personal contradiction in this review.

I am not a fan of the X-Men.

In Defense of DC’s New 52

New52

Jim Lee’s Artwork ❤

In 2011 DC thought up a new marketing strategy to get people to buy more of their comics. At this point, Marvel Comics was kicking their butts when it came to sales, and DC needed something new and fresh. What they did was create something called “The New 52.” A lot of people were wondering if this would be similar to their event 52 in which DC released an issue of the event every week for 52 weeks. We were dead wrong. What they did choose to do was a complete overhaul of the universe combining certain universes and breaking a way new ones and essentially rebooting the entire DC Universe.  Unfortunately this was very controversial and lead to many people dropping DC altogether, and bad mouthing them at any chance they could.  However, unlike some comic fans I am a little more open minded and decided to actually give the new universe a chance. Comically Whedon Part 2: The Runaways

runaways_digest8

Before I even knew that Joss Whedon had a run on this book, I loved the Runaways series. It was fun, had a great story and characters, and was created by Brian K. Vaughn, who wrote one of my favorite Maxi-Series of all time-Y: The Last Man. Continue reading

Comically Whedon Part 1: Astonishing X-Men

astonishing-x-men-1-100k

Man, this Image is first class.

Joss Whedon seems to be a master of all mediums. He has written and directed films, created TV shows, and even wrote a few comic books. Today I will be looking at my favorite X-Men run of all time. This is especially strange since the X-Men as a concept kind of bug me (more on that later). The concept of Astonishing X-Men was brilliant, it was canon, but also not canon. It contained elements of the original comics but avoided the big crossover events and for that I have mad respect for the series.

Disclaimer: The following is an opinion piece and does not reflect the opinions of all writers of The Nerdicon. I have strong feelings on this subject that I wish to share with you. My opinion has no bearing on yours. I welcome feedback, even if you disagree. I do not mean to bash any of our readers who might be a fan of Marvel comics or other Marvel properties. Opinions are amazing, and I will respect yours if you respect mine. That being said, let’s begin.

Alright, and we are back again for me to gripe a bit more on my disappointment with Marvel comics. Our topic this time? Spider-Man…oh Spider-Man, why does Marvel not respect their flagship character anymore? You would think that with such a popular character they would want to at least keep the fans happy so they don’t leave, but hey, he is arguably there highest selling book sans the X-Men ( I will get to them eventually) and The Avengers. I feel that Marvel comics quality in the recent years has been, well, terrible. Of course there are a few shining stars, such as Guardians of the Galaxy, The Ultimates, and Ultimate Spider-Man (the Miles Morales version). But the mainstream stuff has been lacking in quality as of late. To understand this disappointment, you have to understand that I really love Marvel characters. They have some of the world’s greatest characters, like Peter Parker and Steve Rogers, even Tony Stark. The way I see it is DC created the superhero, Marvel created the superhuman. Stan Lee is responsible for many of the greats: Hulk, Spider-Man, Daredevil, etc. But the head writers at Marvel nowadays have been focused more on making money and cheap gimmicky event books than actual character progression and storytelling and it really shows.
