Tasty Television: A Review of Hannibal 1×01 Apéritif

Hannibal Lecter is one of America’s most iconic fictional serial killers. Created by author Thomas Harris in the 1981 novel Red Dragon, he blew up. This lead to two sequel novels, a prequel, and five films featuring the character. The book Red Dragon has been adapted twice for the big screen, the first time with the box office bomb Manhunter in 1986 a film featuring Brian Cox as the famous cannibal, then again in the 2002 film Red Dragon featuring Anthony Hopkins.  Now, in 2013 we have a third adaptation of the book with Bryan Fullers new show: Hannibal. Call Me Joe: A G.I. Joe Retaliation Review

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been a huge G.I. Joe fan. I loved the toys and the cartoon and the animated movie. My favorite incarnation, however, has to be the 2009 animated serial G.I. Joe Resolute. It was adult, serious, and had probably the best interpretation of Cobra Commander I have ever seen. That same year, a live action movie came out, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. I was super excited to see all of my favorite characters on screen, especially Cobra Commander.

So you guys know how I was freaking out about BBC Radio 4’s production of Neverwhere? Well, it aired this past Saturday. And it’s so good. Seriously. I really dig radio plays, and I really dig pretty much everything BBC does (*cough* hence why I want to work there *cough*). Give it a shot! It’s got Neil himself as a character! Check it out here. It’s about an hour per section, but it’s perfectly eerie and spooky. And it’s got Anthony Head as Croup!

I fear I might be one of those lost souls who actually enjoyed Terry Gilliam’s 2005 The Brothers Grimm film. That is the first film that I actually remember that kickstarted doing darker twists and turns on classic fairytales. And, really, fairytales should live in the dark, no matter how much we love Disney.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 Review

dkr2Even though this film is not yet available on DVD, Warner Brothers released the film for digital download on Amazon.com, and being the crazy fanboy I am, I had to get it. Boy am I glad I did. I don’t think I could have waited another few weeks for the Blu-Ray release. This, along with Part One, has to be the seminal Batman film, live action or animated and that’s saying a lot. Thoroughly Animated: A DC Animated Films Retrospective- Part 1

DCWhen it comes to live action films, Marvel has dominated, now more than ever. Unfortunately, DC has only managed to release a few good films, mainly consisting of Batman films, with an okay Superman flick.  Other than that, no other character in their mainstream universe seems to work well on screen (or they just refuse to put them up there).
